Reasons for Skin Darkening
Hormonal imbalance is another major factor among the reasons for skin darkening. Hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, and melanocyte-stimulating hormone directly influence how much melanin the skin produces. Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy, menstruation, menopause, or while using hormonal contraceptives often lead to pigmentation changes. One common condition is melasma, which causes dark patches on the face, particularly on the cheeks, forehead, nose, and upper lip. Hormonal disorders like thyroid imbalance and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can also trigger excessive pigmentation. Stress further worsens hormonal imbalance by increasing cortisol levels, which indirectly contributes to skin darkening.
